INTRODUCING THE ZAPPLE
Appletree Surfboards is proud to launch the ZAPPLE, the world’s first commercially available board featuring a full recess design—which we’ve dubbed the TRENCH—specially crafted to integrate seamlessly with the Foildrive Gen2 foil assist system.
If you’ve been following us on social media, you might have caught glimpses of the prototypes in action. Despite our best efforts, keeping this under wraps was nearly impossible as excited onlookers snapped photos everywhere we went. But now, after rigorous testing and perfecting, we’re ready to officially unveil the ZAPPLE. Yes, the name is a playful nod—zap, electricity, "finger-blasting" fun, and of course, Apple—pretty epic, right?
WHY FOILDRIVE?
Like e-mountain biking, foildrive has transitioned from niche curiosity to a full-fledged sport. While initial reactions might have been skeptical, with some purists dismissing it as a cheat, the advantages are undeniable. One try and you’re hooked! Foildrive has evolved from a simple add-on to a sport that demands specialized equipment. The release of foildrive-specific masts proved that dedicated gear enhances performance—and now, the ZAPPLE is here to revolutionize foildrive boards.
THE DESIGN STORY
We experimented with various boards from our existing lineup and discovered that our downwind prone shapes were ideal for foildrive. Using them as our foundation, we developed the ZAPPLE in three optimised sizes:
These sizes cater to most riders. Our size recommendation is based on weight: the 38L model for riders up to 80 kg, the 46L for up to 90 kg, and the 54L for heavier riders or those who prefer smaller foils.
ANTENNA RECEPTION
A common question: "Will the board maintain good antenna reception?" The answer is a resounding yes. We worked closely with the Foildrive tech team to ensure a seamless signal through the board without sacrificing performance. We’ve found the perfect balance—retaining enough carbon fibre for stiffness and responsiveness while allowing uninterrupted signal flow.
KEY ADVANTAGES
The standout feature of the ZAPPLE is the sunken foildrive battery box, which minimises drag and enhances water flow. This design boosts battery efficiency and smooths out touchdowns. But that’s not all—the placement of the battery closer to your feet significantly improves board balance, making sharp turns easier and the overall ride feel more natural. The ZAPPLE delivers a foiling experience that’s as close to pure wave-riding as possible.
